🔬 Research interest: Alzheimer’s disease, cholesterol, rhomboid intramembrane proteases, protein-cholesterol interactions, cholesterol transport, glucose metabolism, physiological protein functions, brain, cell culture, mouse models
Alzheimer’s disease is the most common form of dementia, however, no cure or effective therapeutic intervention exists, to date. My laboratory focuses on the physiological functions of key proteins linked to the disease and the mechanisms leading to Alzheimer’s disease. Specifically, we focus on the amyloid precursor protein (APP) and its processing through the rhomboid protease RHBDL4, which my lab discovered. This processing path appears to be regulated by cellular cholesterol levels. Our second research theme focuses on cholesterol transport though the apolipoprotein E and the cholesteryl ester transfer protein (CETP), which have been linked to Alzheimer’s disease as well. We utilize biochemical techniques in cell culture and mouse models to inform our research.
