Meet The Team
Sabrina Romanelli
Co-President

Sabrina obtained her undergraduate degree from McGill University in Honours Pharmacology in spring 2022. During her undergraduate training, she participated in research projects in the domains of reproductive immunology and toxicology. In Fall 2022, she joined Dr. Trempe’s lab, excited to join the world of structural biology research. Her research focuses on better understanding proteins implicated in Early Onset Parkinson’s disease. When not in the lab, you can find her binge-watching Disney+ shows or spending time with her dog (Stella) and her friends! Sabrina is eager to continue as co-president of CRBS and wants to plan different outreach and social activities for this year!
Laura Bohorquez Romero
VP Academic

Laura is from Colombia, where she completed her bachelor’s degree in biology at Universidad de Los Andes. She moved to Montreal to pursue her master’s and is currently a student in the Ortega Lab. Her research focuses on understanding Neuronal RNA Granules using structural biology tools such as cryo-ET. Outside the lab, she enjoys reading, traveling, and spending time with her two cats, Maple and Miel.
Alexandra Dimitrov
VP Communication

Alexandra completed her B.Sc. in Honours Pharmacology at McGill University in spring 2025. As an undergraduate, she investigated the role of TOM proteins in mitochondrial protein import in the lab of Dr. Jean-François Trempe. She is now continuing in the Trempe lab as a graduate student, where her research focuses on the mitochondrial E3 ligase MAPL and its role in mitochondrial dynamics. Outside the lab, she enjoys staying active outdoors and relaxing at home with a good movie and her cat, Theo.
James Iarocci
VP Finance

James grew up in Montreal, Quebec. He completed his B.Sc in the department of Anatomy and Cell Biology at McGill. In the Guo Lab, James is a second year MSc student using structural biology techniques such as cryo-electron tomography and cryo-EM single-particle analysis to elucidate the architectures of the Type IV Pilus Machine found in many pathogens and environmental bacteria. He hopes to gain valuable experience and become an expert of Cryo-EM. Outside the lab, James likes to travel and try new foods. He also enjoys playing piano.
Seyed Ehsan Vasegh
VP External

Seyed obtained an Honours Bachelor's degree in Pharmacology and Therapeutics at McGill. During his undergraduate studies, he focused on the synthesis of thienopyrimidine amino bisphosphonates and antisense oligonucleotide therapeutics in the Department of Chemistry. In Fall 2023, he joined Dr. Castagner’s lab, moving into the field of carbohydrate chemistry while building on his synthesis skills. His current research centers on designing and developing inositol phosphate therapeutics to combat Clostridioides difficile infection. When not in the lab, you can find Seyed exercising at the gym or checking out new places to eat.
Alexandra Hughes-Goyette
VP Social

Allie was born and raised in Squamish, BC and later moved to Fredericton, NB to pursue an undergraduate degree in Chemical Engineering, Biomedical Option at the University of New Brunswick. After completing her BSE, Allie moved to Montreal to begin a Master's in Biochemistry in Martin Schmeing's lab, where she is studying the structure and function of two different NRPSs, one involved in the fabrication of a blue dye called indigoidine, and the other the only NRPS found in humans. Outside of the lab, Allie plays soccer for the McGill women's varsity team as well as semi-professionally in Ligue 1 Quebec. She also enjoys baking, reading, and hanging out with friends and family.
Danielle Simons
VP Mentorship

Born in Brockville, Ontario Danielle obtained her bachelor’s degree from the University of Waterloo in Honours Biochemistry (Co-op). Currently she is a second year PhD student in the lab of Jean-Francois Trempe. Danielle’s research aims to uncover novel functions of the mitochondrial processing peptidase, a protein crucial for regulating mitochondrial protein import with implications in cerebellar ataxia and childhood neurodegeneration. Outside the lab, she enjoys cooking, going to the gym, and traveling.
Lee Rowsell
VP Equity Diversity Inclusion

Lee is from the small island town of Harrington Harbour, Québec, and earned her BSc in Biochemistry with a minor in Pharmacology from McGill University in 2024. During her undergraduate studies, she developed a passion for biophysics and structural biology which she is building on as a member of the Bui Lab (co-supervised by Dr. Albert Berghuis) studying centrioles and the assembly of proteins key for ciliogenesis. Alongside gaining hands-on experience in Cryo-EM, Lee enjoys live music, running, reading, and exploring the city. As VP EDI, she looks forward to contributing to CRBS outreach and helping to build a community where science is accessible to all.
Monika Kojic
Co-President

Monika is from Windsor, Ontario, where she completed her B.Sc. in Biochemistry at the University of Windsor. During her undergraduate studies, she worked in the Rondeau-Gagné lab on developing a nano-delivery system for therapeutic use in glioblastoma multiforme. Her M.Sc. research, as part of the McKeague lab, focused on developing RNA therapeutics to improve acute myeloid leukemia treatment. Currently, she is continuing her PhD in the McKeague lab with the goal of developing novel RNA switches for precise gene control. Outside of the lab, she enjoys travelling, going to concerts, dancing, and spending time with friends and family. As CRBS co-president, she is excited to connect the CRBS community through research, networking and mentorship opportunities.
Elaine Wang
VP Academic

Elaine completed her B.Sc Honours and M.Sc in Molecular Biology and Biochemistry at Simon Fraser University. During her master’s degree, Elaine investigated the structure and functions of the Type IV pili proteins using X-ray crystallography and biochemical assays. In Zeytuni lab, Elaine utilizes structural biology techniques to determine bacterial pathogens' virulence factors' structure and function. Outside of the lab, Elaine loves sports and playing classical guitar.
Harry Kaur
VP Communications

Harry Kaur was born in the scenic state of Assam, India. She earned her doctorate from IIT Roorkee and, in 2025, moved to Montreal to pursue postdoctoral research at McGill University. Currently, she is a researcher in the Alba Guarné Lab, where she studies mobile DNA elements and their roles in genomic stability and chromosome evolution. Her project focuses on uncovering the molecular mechanisms that govern Tn7 target-site selection and transposition frequency, with potential applications in medicine and biotechnology. Outside the lab, Harry enjoys traveling, cooking and writing. As Vice President of Communications, she is excited to foster connections among researchers across disciplines and advance omics-based research. She also strives to grow as a self-driven scientist, contributing both academically and socially to the Canadian research ecosystem.
Ryu Williston
VP Finance

Ryu is from Miramichi, New Brunswick, and has close ties to Fukushima, Japan. He obtained his B.Sc. in Biochemistry at Mount Allison University. Ryu is co-supervised by Dr. Shuaiqi Guo and Dr. John Presley. His research focuses on protein complexes, particularly adhesins, that enable pathogens to invade and survive within the intracellular environment of mammalian cells. He hopes to gain valuable experience by mastering techniques in Cryo-EM, fluorescence microscopy, and tissue culture. Outside the lab, Ryu enjoys reading, skateboarding, and playing rugby.
Mingyu Wang
VP External

Mingyu obtained his B.A. in Molecular Biology and Biochemistry at Wesleyan University (Middletown, CT, USA) where he completed an undergraduate thesis under Prof. Rich Olson. In the Guo Lab, Mingyu is excited to learn and apply cutting-edge cryo-EM techniques such as cryo-electron tomography with subtomogram averaging to investigate structures and functions of membrane-embedded protein nanomachineries. He hopes to pursue research on biomolecules and proteins that have the potential to impact human health and climate change. Outside the lab, Mingyu is learning the French language. Motivated by a sense of responsibility, Mingyu follows the topics of active climate policy, just economic development, and the social basis for sustainable pluralism.
Julie Nadeau
VP Social

Julie obtained her undergraduate degree from Mount Allison University in Biochemistry with honours, double minor in Chemistry and Biology. Currently, Julie is a second-year MSc student in the Department of Anatomy and Cell biology working in Dr. Shuaiqi Guo’s lab. She is studying RTX adhesin proteins using structural biology techniques. Outside of the lab, Julie enjoys reading, running, and trying new things.
Yiran Fan
VP Mentorship

Yiran was born in China, and she moved to Montreal for her undergraduate education at McGill in 2019. She graduated in the year 2023, and stayed on for her master's in Vogel lab. Here, she worked on the control mechanisms underlying a critical condensate during the metaphase of budding yeast mitosis. Outside the lab, she enjoys solving Rubik's Cube, occasional drawing, and exercising at the gym. She is excited to lead the newly-launched mentorship program with Danielle, and at the same time, work as a returning mentor for the program.
Julian Wagner
Emeritus Advisor

Julian was born in Germany, and before coming to Montreal for his master's, he obtained a Franco-German undergraduate degree in molecular and cell biology. He completed his master's in the Gehring lab, where he studied the E3 ubiquitin ligase parkin mutated in familial forms of Parkinson's disease. Now he is pursuing a PhD in biophysics, focusing on cell membrane biology, in Stockholm (Sweden). Additionally, he is passionate about teaching, outreach, and science communication. Outside the lab, you can find him at concerts, and he also enjoys swimming, reading, and playing tabletop games.
